POSTER FOR A CAUSE

The project this week was to create a poster for a cause without the uses of black and white. This project was very fun. The colors I chose to work with were orange and blue. I used many different values of orange ranging from dark orange to a pale yellow for the main portion of the poster. I used the blues to make the text and image stand out. I used the lighter value of orange/yellow as a light at the end on the tunnel kind of thing.
I had a hard time starting this project and I was really stuck on the idea of using orange. I think it had to do with the wonderful sunshine we have been blessed will.

COLOR

Our project this week was to make a color wheel and work with hue. I made my color wheel in Illustrator and found this to be a very interesting project. It helped me to understand color better and the mixing of color.

VALUE

Self Portrait

This week’s project was to make a self portrait collage made from materials collected for week 10. This project was quite a challenge for me. I decided to make this collage with Photoshop and many times I found myself thinking that I wish I had done this the traditional way. I spent hours on this and easily could have spent more on it but time is up. You could really fine tune something like this if you have the time. Self portraits are not easy to do but this was a great experience.

ILLUSTION OF SPACE AND MOTION

Illusion of space

Exaggerated Size
This image is using exaggerated size to make the man appear to be larger than the building. The building is far away in the background and the man is very close to the photographer.

One Point Perspective
This image uses a one point perspective and the posision of the photographer creates the feeling of a very large space. You can tell that the linear perspective starts straight ahead as I have pointed out.

aerial perspective
This piece is an example of aerial perspective it uses color or value to show depth. The colors in the background are lighter and grayish. The rocks in the mid ground are no taller than the ones in the background but the coloring suggests that they are closer. There is use of size in this piece with the close up of the angel in the right bottom corner.

Illusion of Motion

Relative Stillness
This art piece is an example of relative stillness. The piece looks like a photograph shot at high speed while the penguins are filing through the air. With the specks of snow flying around the penguins and the fact that they are in the air implies that they are in motion. This piece also uses sizing to imply that each penguin is at a different distance away.

Cropped Figures
This image is an example of a cropped figure. This image uses repetition and cropping to create the feeling of movement. This image also give the feeling of relative stillness in the way it just looks like it is hanging there in the sky.

Multiple Image
This image is an example of multiple images we see one figure in many overlapping poses. This image looks like the figure is standing and moves into a lying down position or vice versa. This creates the impression of movement.

PATTERN AND TEXTURE

Here are my 15 pattern and texture pieces I have chosen. I am now thinking that I need something with more white in it. I chose many different fabrics, white birch bark, tin foil, doily, and a filter. I was fun trying to come up with different items that had pattern or texture.

This is my value scale created with the pattern and texture items I chose.

Shape and Valume

This weeks lesson was about shape and valume. The project due is a black and white image with the negative shape being black and possitive being white. This was a fun project and really gets you thinking about shape.

LINE

This weeks lesson was on line. For the first part of the project due we were asked to draw lines with different medium. The lines needed to repressent four different emotions. This is what I came up with for angry, calm, sad, and happy.

This is the second part of the  project due and again using different mediums we were asked to draw lines that repressented four different verbs. This is what I came up with for fast, slow, scream, and meander.

For the third part of the project we were asked to draw 1 contour, 1 blind contour, 2 gestures (1 wet and 1 dry).

For the fourth part of this project we were asked to draw four different images with the lines expressing volume.

This project was difficult for me in that the feeling of art was not flowing through me. I am the type of person that cannot draw well if the feeling isn't there.

Headshot

I have very few pictures of myself and they are mostly of me and my daughter. This picture is four years old and is a good explanation of myself.  I am a Mom which can tend to take over your identity. I am very demanding of myself and people around me. In general I have the tendency of thinking that if you don’t giving 110% in what you are doing you are not trying. I am somewhat of a perfectionist which seems to be a family trait. I like to pick and joke around as a way of getting away from my high expectations of myself.  This image shows how proud I am to be a Mom and that I would do anything to protect this child. I do not like getting my picture taken and try not to look at the camera. I am a huge fan of, “do-it-yourself,” type of things and, “working with what you have.” For example I did the electrical wiring in my house, sheet rocking, and many other things. I just go get books or go on the internet, read up on it and see if I can do it. The work with what you have thing for example, there is a loft in my daughter's room and for the railing I went outside cut down some small trees and maid the railing out of trees instead of buying them. I love to create with my hands and get great pleasure from working with wood and in the dirt. Gardening is a great release for me and helps me to relax and recharge.
In this image I think the focal point is my smile then it shifts you to what I am looking at. The image has good balance even with the top of my head going off the top left there is more weight on the bottom right to off set that. There is also rhythm in the snow behind us.

RHYTHM

This week’s lesson is about rhythm. We needed to use a photograph that represented one of the five senses and we needed to choose four words that had to do with that sense. I chose taste and the four words I used were: sour, sweet, spicy, and mild.  Finally, we needed to design a fifth image that was inspired by the sense chosen. This project was a bit more difficult to do than I thought it would be. Using Adobe Photoshop I used filters to manipulate the image of a mouth. After going through the filters many times this is what I came up with.

BALANCE

Here is a picture of what I was working with for this project. It was difficult trying to see the balance for this in black and white making it hard not pay any attention to the colors.

This is the work in black with a white background which I did in Photoshop. This was the first part of this project and then the second part we needed to make a separate balance piece with the background from this one.

This is the second part of our project and it was quite fun. Taking the white background from the first part of the project and arranged the pieces on a black background. This took quite some time and trying to figure out how to use these left over pieces to make an image of balance.

SCALE

This collaged I created in Photoshop with images of my own. I made it will five separate images. The base layer is the flower which is in my flower garden. The birds are from three different pictures I took this winter and the statue of the Mom and child is in my garden. This was great fun creating this and manipulating the scale.
I tried several images in this collage... bench, bird house, other statues but I thinned it down to this.

EMPHASIS AND FOCAL POINT

Contrast
I chose this image because the focal point achieves emphasis with the contrast of color. The contrast of the two colored leave in this pile of black and whites creates a focal point. I love working with an image like this by changing it to black and white then bring back out the color of something in the image so it stands out.
Isolation
http://www.stevenmarton.com/art-2
I choose this art piece because the figure in the further right is the focal point and is in a state of isolation. The isolation seems to feel much larger then the room he is in. The focal point is off to the side seperate from things in the room. Even though there is a large window in this piece my eye goes right to the figure.

Placement
I love this piece! When I first looked at it I just thought it was a bunch of mushrooms and then I enlarged it and saw the widows, door, ladder, etc. When opening this image I thought the focal point was the larger mushrooms but after enlarging it I saw that the lighting at the door of the mushroom house is the focal point right where the large mushrooms are joined together.

One Element
http://www.blogcatalog.com/blogs/superxofficial
This image is my choose for One Element because of the red painted "A" that over laps the "O" in the neon sign. It is visually strong and it is related to the other elements being that they are letters.

Absence of Focal Point
I choose this piece for my Absence of Focal Point because there isn't one. It is a very nice piece of art and the artist uses similar colors, shapes and texture through out the whole piece.

UNITY

Proximity

In this piece of art work you can clearly see the elements are close together creating proximity. If you go to the link above you will also see a closer image of this work. It has great texture and uses many different materials.

Repetition Similarity

This art work clearly shows repetition with an emphasis on similarities. It uses a similar line repeatedly just at a slightly different angle.

Repetition Variety

I love this one! It shows repetition with the mirrows and variety with the different size and colors of mirrors. The background is made from pasted new print which also brings a relative nature to the background and also makes the colored mirrors pop. I would really like to see this in person.
Continuation

I choose this one for continuation because of how each color continues the last colors line. I like how these colors swirl with each other and also give a feel of texture.
Grid

This piece I choose for grid because you can clearly see this piece was base on it. Even though this piece looks simple I can not image the time that was put into setting up the grid for this. The grid on this piece goes in at least four different directions and was done exact.

Chaotic

http://www.dailyartfixx.com/2010/08/25/tom-shannon-pendulum-paintings/

This piece is chaotic to me being that there is so much going on that no one part of it sands out more than an other. It is very interesting how the artist created this piece and you can read about it on the site about.
Non-objective

http://mw-mw.com/8.html
This piece shows no recognizable subject matter. The lines and colors are great and show no indication of a subject.

Figurative

This piece clearly shows a  recognizable figure of a woman. This piece was done with charcoal on paper and has great value and shading.

My Ideal 2D Design

I picked this drawing for one of my ideal 2d designs because I very much enjoy every day things place of paper or canvas. When you see a piece of art with ordinary items on it, it makes you stop and think about what is right in front of you. It can be a calming effect that tends to ground you.

Above is a link to see some more of these very interesting works of art by Simon Schubert. I decided to post this piece of art as one of my ideals mainly because I have never see such a thing nor did I even know this type of art was out there. Art is amazing, changing, inspiring, whimsical, breath taking, and always surprising.

Here is another piece of art I wanted to include. To me it appears to be a tree with a lot to say. The artist is telling a story and even though I have never met this artist their piece of art is talking about me. To someone else it could be something completely different. It gives you an idea of what it is without telling the whole story and leaving it up to the view to decide what it is saying in their own way.
